[font=verdana]It seemed to be a different batch of kids this year, maybe it was the ages. I had them from ten year old to babies in strollers. I knew I couldn't put up with crying kids for two weeks, but what was I to do?[/font]
[font=verdana]That night when all eleven of them were snug in their beds, I got out my easel and a 16 by 20 canvas and set it up in the living room. The next morning when they were around Papa's big table eating French toast, I told them I had an announcement to make. I said, "Kids, I need all the blood I can get. I can't find exactly the right shade of red I need so it's going to have to be blood. So, if you get cut or scratched, please bring me your blood."[/font]
[font=verdana]I heard forks dropping and mouths falling open! When they went out to play, I did about a thousand dishes and started in making beds. As I passed an open window, I heard little voices saying, "Dig harder, Cassandra, scratch deeper!" My first thought was 'why were they digging holes in the yard when they have all that sand on the beach to dig?' But then I heard Buddy say, "Now squeeze it hard, Cassie, and when the blood comes out, run to Grandma quick!"[/font]
[font=verdana]Sure enough, Buddy and Brooks were trying to draw blood from the little ones! Well, at least they would tire of this in a day or so and I could put the easel and canvas away and they wouldn't be crying at every scratch or mosquito bite. Wrong![/font]
[font=verdana]It only got worse..every walk in the woods, every trip to the sand dunes, every fishing trip, we had to hurry home because someone had blood for Grandma. It got so bad, we started taking the canvas with us everywhere we went![/font]
[font=verdana]I'm ashamed to admit that even I got caught up in it. One morning Papa cut himself shaving and came out of the bathroom with little pieces of toilet tissue over the cuts. I yelled at him, "What's the matter with you? Take that tissue off, it'll stop the bleeding and I need that blood!" He laughed about that for years, but I was too embarrassed to laugh.[/font]
[font=verdana]Then it happened..real blood and lots of it. Kristie was digging fresh water clams and either uncovered a piece of glass or a broken clam shell...stepped on it and cut her foot open.[/font]
[font=verdana]A couple of the boys helped her into the house. Of course she was crying and hopping on one foot. We grabbed the first aid kit and I was trying to calm her down at the same time and she just cried louder. Finally I said, "Kristie, I know it hurts bad, you just cry all you want." She said "It does hurt, Grandma, but I'm crying because I lost a lot of your blood in the lake!"[/font]
[font=verdana]In the meantime, Brooks was over at the canvas and when we asked what he was doing, he said, "I caught a lot of her blood for you when we were bringing her in." Oh my! I had created a bunch of blood thirsty kids![/font]
[font=verdana]Up to now I just had a blob on the canvas that I thought I might turn into the sand dunes, but Brooks had smeared his handful of blood higher on the canvas and Kristie had lots more to give![/font]
[font=verdana]Well, the weeks passed and finally it was our last night. Papa built the campfire and we had hobo dinners around the campfire. I brought out the "finished" picture and told them the Indian needed a name. I promise you we didn't help them at all..they would come with a name and have a vote...then come with another and vote. Finally, they all agreed...BLOOD BROTHER![/font]
