just do it! why not?I'm going to set up Gentoo on a production-level homeserver, its mission is rather uncritical, however, I still want the machine to become as stable as Gentoo/Linux can...
i'd choose 2.4.x when needing "production level"The hardware consists of the following:
MSI KM3M-V (KM266Pro, VT8237) SktA
AMD AthlonXP 1700+ (@550MHz)
512MB DDR-SDRAM non-ECC
4x Seagate 160GB EIDE HDDs 7200RPM (RAID5)
additional VIA Rhine based PCI-NIC
I've made pretty good experiences with Linux Kernel-level RAID (levels 0 and 1, however), so I want to go for 2.6.x (always latest vanilla-release) because of some improvements over 2.4, performance-wise. The box is going to run 24/7, and supposed to do the following tasks/provide these services:
all things mentioned are no problem to get them running. but i would not emerge -u world often, that would lead into big troubles sooner or later. believe me.Routing/Masquerading (maybe also Trafficshaping/Packet Queueing, any good HowTos on these things anyone? Smile)
Serving data (NFS, Samba)
httpd (Apache2 + php)
mysql
local Gentoo distfiles/Portage-tree mirror
transparent HTTP-Proxy
some service similar to TeamSpeak2
local ircd
DNS
DHCP
mldonkey
identd
eMail (SMTP & IMAP)
ntpd
maybe a centralized LOG-Server (syslog-ng)
there are a lot of useflag howtos out there...Can you please provide me with recommendations about what packages to merge/which USE-Flags to set, to do the things I want?
no.I'd like to use unicode throughout the whole setup, how do I realize that the most efficient way? I'm going to use unicode on all my machines the next time I set them up anew, this is the first one to try it out - will there be any serious hassles with utf8->iso-8859-1(5)-conversion while mied usage prevails?
i would use reiserfs or xfs. ext2 for the boot partition. maybe ext3 for system partition. What fs is best to use for these tasks? I'd go for ext3, is this OK/adviseable? How shall I set up the partitions of the Array? Is it a good idea to use LVM2 when considering the given available diskspace (about 450GB)?
http://www.apcupsd.com/The system will be shielded from power-loss via an APC UPS, are there any daemons in Portage to handle such a device's messages (model: "APC Smart-UPS 620")?
