A Q&A with Todd Holmdahl, the hardware guy at Microsoft, about Xbox 360 failures

Kurze Version:

Q: Die 360 geht ganz schön oft kaputt, eh?

A: Kein Kommentar.

Lange Version:
Q: What is the post-mortem on Xbox 360 manufacturing? How has it turned out for you?

A: Like any other post mortem, there are some things you would have done differently that you learned and that you incorporate back into your processes. Overall, it was really smoothe compared to the complexity of the product we were building.

[...]

Q: I’m sure you’ve seen some of these complaints that we’ve written about from the guy who went through seven machines. There are a lot of people posting on the blog saying they still have problems. There is a lot of anecdotal evidence that the quality of the Xbox 360 isn’t there. How can you paint the bigger picture for me there?

A: We’re very proud of the box. We think the vast majority of people are having just a great experience. You look at the number of games they are buying, the number of accessories they are buying, the Live attach. They love the box. They continue to buy the box. That said, we take any customer issue very seriously. We continue to look into these things very deeply. You have seen we have made some changes to our customer service policy.

[...]

Q: Do you still say that is a normal return rate for the console?
A: We continue to say the vast majority of the people are really happy with it.

[...]

Q: I’ve heard varying accounts of what is considered a normal return rate. Some people say that 2 percent is normal. Sometimes 3 percent to 5 percent is considered normal. Back to that question, can you address whether you are within those rates or within a normal rate.

A: We don’t disclose the actual number.

[...]

Q: Normal compared to the Xbox?

A: We don’t comment on that.

[...]

Q: What explains this anecodotal evidence that it’s out of whack, compared to the Wii or the PlayStation 3 or other consoles.

A: I would go back and say the vast majority of people love their experience. We continue to go back and address all of these issues on a case by case basis. There is a vocal minority out there. We go off and try to address their issues as quickly and as pain free as possible.

[...]

Q: There were some folks, who are not totally guessing, who said that when you had three million consoles in the market, you have a bone pile of bad ones. That seems to suggest a pretty high defect rate as far as the yield goes. Can you address that?

A: We don’t talk about our production.

[...]

Q: There is talk you are going to 65 nanometer chips. Can you talk about the significance of that?

A: We continue to redesign the box, continue to drive costs out. We don’t talk about the specifics of it.

Hätte man mal Nintendo Aktien gekauft :/
TOKYO, June 20 (Reuters) - Nintendo Co. Ltd. on Wednesday shot past Panasonic maker Matsushita in market value and closed in on rival Sony Corp. as investors took heart from white hot demand for its Wii and DS game gear.

Nintendo shares closed up 1.4 percent at 44,500 yen, increasing its market capitalisation to 6.30 trillion yen ($51 billion).

That compares with Matsushita's 6.23 trillion yen ($50.5 billion) and 6.64 trillion yen ($54 billion) for Sony -- the world's largest and second-largest consumer electronics makers, each having sales more than eight times as big as Nintendo...

..."Nintendo is a market leader in everything it does now, which is basically the handheld as well as console gaming market. We haven't seen Nintendo being a market leader in both products for over a decade," KBC Securities analyst Hiroshi Kamide said.

"It shows what a fantastic market position Nintendo has at the moment in its industry."

Shares in Sony have gained 72 percent during the last two years, outperforming the Nikkei average's (.N225: Quote, Profile, Research) 59 percent rise. But the performance is far outstripped by Nintendo shares, which jumped nearly four-fold over the same period...

Wipeout HD noch dieses Jahr
Understandably, Buckley wasn't too forthcoming, but confirmed the Liverpool based team wants to quickly release an iteration in the form of Wipeout HD, which should be officially announced in August or even earlier at E3. 1UP learned Wipeout HD is simply the first step, with a "major" Wipeout release penciled in for sometime in 2008. Wipeout HD will feature a online multiplayer mode and, while unconfirmed, likely HD-enabled tracks from Wipeout Pulse, as well.

Wipeout HD should arrive on the PlayStation Network before the end of the year.

Report: Japanese publishers switching over to Wii

Namco Bandai, Capcom, and Sega are redirecting resources from Sony and Microsoft projects to Nintendo projects, reports Variety Asia.

By Tom Magrino, GameSpot
Posted Jun 27, 2007 1:37 pm PT

According to a report from Variety Asia, Japan's top three third-party publishers are ramping up development for Nintendo's Wii and DS systems, at the expense of rivals Sony and Microsoft. Namco Bandai will reportedly increase Nintendo hardware development by 109 percent to 115 titles, Sega will up its titles by 96 percent to 49, and Capcom titles will rise by 5 percent to 20 (<- lol).

Not only will Nintendo platforms be getting a greater assortment of games, but they will see a greater availability of them as well. Variety Asia says that more than 26.8 million units of Wii, DS, and Game Boy Advance software will ship during Nintendo's 2007 fiscal year. By comparison, 23.3 million units of software for the Sony platform will ship during the same period. Further, Sony machines will see a 30 to 40 percent decrease in shipped units from the three Japanese publishers, while Capcom alone will increase shipments for Nintendo systems by 81 percent to 4.7 million units.

As for the why, Variety Asia states that in addition to the fact the Wii and DS are trouncing the competition in the North American and Japanese markets, development costs are lower for Nintendo's hardware.

The report also states that another Japanese software giant, Square Enix, does not plan to develop any new titles for the PlayStation 3 until the console's installed base rises enough to make increased next-gen development costs worthwhile. However, Variety Asia made no mention that the company has several PS3 projects currently in development, including Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Square Enix's president and CEO, Yoichi Wada, recently called the Xbox 360 and PS3 "over-engineered" and "mismatched" to gamers needs in a Financial Times report.

NoWay Studio announces C.O.R.E. - a revolutionary FPS game for Nintendo DS

WARSAW, POLAND June 27th, 2007 NoWay Studio a division of QubicGames dedicated to development of games for Nintendo DS today announced its debut title C.O.R.E., which advences players to the year 2050 onto the battleground set in the underground laboratory complex.

We like to think that C.O.R.E. is a classic FPS game which we took to the next level. Our idea was to implement the advanced graphics solutions and make the maximum use of unique features offered by Nintendo DS such as dual screen and touch-screen control system. Thanks to that we came up with unprecedented gaming experience packed with a multitude of weapons, eerie enemies and primarily groundbraking gameplay and original storyline - said Lukasz Zarnowiecki team leader at NoWay Studio. Furthermore a number of multiplayer modes offered will satisfy picky hardcore gamers - he added.

Indeed C.O.R.E. tells the story of a US Marine sent to discover the mysteries behind the door of a top secret US Army lab complex built to research the effects of the meteor crash from years ago. The gruesome discoveries of the marine are empahsised by sinister interior of the complex while the heavy music escalates the ever-intensifing action and dark morbid ambience.

C.O.R.E. is scheduled to be completed in Q4 this year, while the first previews of the game will be offered to publishers and press representatives at Games Convention in Leipzig. For more information on the game please visit the game's site at http://corethegame.com/

Final Fantasy dev says PS3 best expresses the company's imagination
The PS3's top-spec performance has earned it the love of Square Enix developer, Tetsuya Nomura, who gave Sony's shiny box some serious props in a recent interview with Dengeki Playstation Magazine.
The enthusiastic level designer gushed: "It's not just about how pretty the graphics are but more of how much limited [we think he means unlimited] amount of movement we can put in one go and how big our imagination and ideas are."
He goes on to enthuse (clearly, this time): "The PS3 is the machine that is closest to being able to express our imagination."
