Little Shop of Horrors is a clear inspiration to this episode. The hot tub being the metaphorical cannibal plant. Many of the themes of the play are kept, such as temptation by the living inanimate object and the death of the protagonist's love and the protagonist himself. The method of death for the Principal is akin to the death of Mr. Mushnik in the film adaptation. The finale song is similar to the film adaptation's song "Mean Green Mother from Outer Space". Also in keeping with the dark ending of the play and parodying the happy ending of the film adaptation Stan dies just as Seymour.
