Which program do you use for 3d modeling? 3D Studio Max? Maya? Cinema4D? Blender?
I think you'll find the most Q3 modeling tutorials for 3D Studio Max (or the free version named GMax) and Milkshape3D..
It's difficult to explain that in a quick way, so i suggest that you take a look at some tutorials and try to build a simple model (really simple! don't exaggerate in the beginning, it will just be frustrating )..
Calculate a lot of learning time because you can't learn this over a rainy weekend :>

I recently found this tool. It is standalone and converts your .obj to
any old days model formats from quake I to quake IV and much more.
