Q4MAX 0.78C UPDATE BY ANTHONYJ
"Since I got a PM about this yesterday (before the 0.78c release), I guess people are still finding this thread, so I'll correct a few facts stated that are no longer true.
Be aware that AAS's built with 0.78b are not suitable for use with 0.78c, and you should regenerate them all. They still arent final though, and may cause problems in the future when bots are finished.
bot_runRandomly no exists, and therefore you dont need to set net_allowcheats either. If you want to stop them moving, you can use bot_movement 0.
You can use them in Duel now. They understand the concept of teams now, and have a vague idea about CTF (although they have map issues with q4ctf1 for example).
We've seen issues of bots being invisible (and when you spec them, you see them in the ground). This seems to only happen with bots spawned with a specific personality - which is currently only "cortez". Try "addbot cortez" (or the admin menu), but YMMV.
The bots are still below SABot in some ways, although on a par or better in others. No need to hassle on timescales.... when its done."

Since the last versions of Q4Max, Quake 4's bots have experienced an awesome evolution. They were totally unplayable before 1.4, but Q4Max team has done an awesome job since then and now we have something decent to fight against when we don't have any server to play on or any friend to duel with (honestly, nothing compared to the old oakbots etc).
Consdering Q4Max hasn't added a tutorial in order to play with bots, I'm gonna write an small guide to help anyone who wants to practice and have fun with them =)
Here are the steps!:
1- First we will need the AAS file of the map we want to play with bots. So for example, if we want to play with bots in Galang, we will need to creat the AAS file for l4dm1_1 map (if you don't know whats the file name of your favourite map, just create a new game, open the console and you'll see some instructions there that have the map name on it). We start Q4Max, and write the following command into your console (¡in the main menu, not while playing!):
runBotAAS mp/l4dm1_1
(Edit - Yeah, I forgot to tell what Anthony said in a reply "Also, for addon maps, you may need to do the hack of spawning a server on the map first, and then disconnecting." before writing that command.)
2- Your game will create the AAS file. Afterthat, you need to restart the game (we WONT need to do the process of creating an AAS again, except as Anthony said, when a new version of Q4Max is released. Once the AAS is created, we only need to create a new server and follow the tutorial starting at the 3d step).
3- Now it's time to start a new FFA (duel doesn't works yet) arena. Create a new Galang (or the map you created the AAS for) game.
4- Once we are inside the game, we have to add the bot. The command is the following:
addBot namebot
where namebot is the name you wanna for your bot =P
5- Afterthat, you'll need to change the variable for net_allowcheats to 1:
net_allowcheats 1
we need to do that in order to activate the next and last command (otherwise, it would not work and the bot wouldn't move).
6- As you see, bot is there, but it isn't moving yet. That's why we will write this:
bot_runrandomly 1
...and voilá, the bot is moving, jumping, dodging and shooting =)
There are some other interesting commands for bots, like bot_dodge or bot_friendly. Just type bot_ + tab to see everything you can tweak. ¡Can't wait to have an interface menu to configure the bot options!
It's true bots are still far from perfect, but in my opinion they are already playable atm, specially for new players. Yeah, good players won't probably find a tough decent with them (tho they have a pretty aim, to be honest), but at least this will help people who are starting to play Quake 4 and wanna learn a bit before joining the "pro" servers =)
Anyways, hope this "tutorial" helped (and hope my english has been good enough, haha) anyone who were interested in finally playing with bots in Quake 4!
Thanks for reading, and thanks Q4Max team for their support to Quake 4 and the job done with bots!
Saludos!
